NIGER INVASION AND THE WEEPING NORTHERN NIGERIA -Emmanuel Wuyep

The ousting of President Mohammadu Bazoum by presidential guards last week is generating a lot of ripples in her neighbouring countries and the international community.

While most of the strongest democratic Nations like the US,UK, France and their allies have continued to fume over the act calling for immediate restoration of democracy; some smaller African countries with same anticidence like Mali,Burkina Faso and Libya have found the NIGERIEN junta a worthy ally that must be supported.

They are threatening brimstones against any attempt to twart the new sheriffs of Niger.Nigeria,her immediate neighbour and leader of African nations receiving the blame as she strifes to act the big brother and wield the big stick as the Chairman of ECOWAS.

The ECOWAS charter,has the protection of democracy in member states as its cardinal principles and Nigeria as its current chairperson and big brother must showcase her commitment to that.The commitment however,is coming with a lot of rancour.

The Northern Nigerian people, banking on their Hausa/Fulani commonality with Niger are against any sanction especially military invasion in a warfare manner.

Their argument wether genuine or trivial,is a big headache to president Tinubu.Commentators have argued that any military action against Niger will affect the North and shouldn't be contemplated upon.Others with divisive mission have even started accusing Tinubu of deliberately trying to suffer and dismember the North as if Niamey is in Northern Nigeria.

One begins to wonder why Northern Nigeria is crying more than NIGERIEN.This is a pure case of somebody crying more than the bereaved.

With the outcome of the ECOWAS summit held in Abuja today, I only sympathize with president Tinubu whom is in a serious conundrum between being a darling of the North and being a committed leader especially in the eye of the globe.

Triviality must not surpass national, regional and world humanitarian interest.
